In 2011, I bought a funny little house in Beach Haven, on Auckland’s North Shore. In 2012, I moved into it and a few months after that I started writing a story about what it was like to move to the burbs where we have four dairies but no restaurants or gourmet food stores, but there are wood pigeons and a beautiful estuary. It took me a couple of years to write – during which time Hannah moved in, we got married and she got pregnant with our first child. Here’s the result, a sort of ode to a new life in a new suburb which isn’t that far away, really. Thanks to Metro magazine and its editor Simon Wilson for publishing this.
